Rewind, recap: Weekly update w/e 04/10/20

Well if last week’s post was sparse, this one probably shouldn’t have even been written. I’ve done nothing. Nada. Probably less than that. Worked longer than intended at teh day job, completely struggled with my mojo on the blogging front despite thoroughly enjoying the paltry two books I eventually read and went nowhere other than to town for a coffee at the weekend as the weather was pants. Most exciting thing I did all week was get my flu jab. Go me! So instead of inspiring scenery you can have a look at my far too messy bookshelves. They’re causing me immense stress right now. This is far from all my books, but contains the majority of my signed copies.

Colleagues of the day. Yes. One is a mug …

How has your week been? More exciting than mine? Did you celebrate Bookshop Day on Saturday? Buy anything nice? I couldn’t get to a physical shop but I did order a copy of The Devil and the Dark Water by Stuart Turton as it was really pretty. Has a few other deliveries in the week too – copie of Ryan’s Christmas and The Shrine by LJ Ross and a special edition copy of A Song for the Dark Times by Ian Rankin. I also received my two special edition copies of the Agatha Christie books, Death on the Nile and Midwinter Murder

Three new Netgalley books this week. I am going on a ban after this as I need to catch up. (Yeah …. right. Like that will happen) Death Score by Angela Marsons; Good Girl by Mel Sherratt and The Coffinmaker’s Garden by Stuart MacBride. Excited to read them all, scared I won’t have the mojo or the time. I think we all know that feeling.

Books I have read

Shadow Sands by Robert Bryndza

The internationally bestselling author of Nine Elms and The Girl in the Ice Robert Bryndza is back with a nail-biting new Kate Marshall case, a woman with a dark secret and a powerful sense of justice.

When Kate Marshall finds the bloated body of a young man floating in the Shadow Sands reservoir, the authorities label it a tragic accident.

But the details don’t add up: why was the victim there, in the middle of the night? If he was such a strong swimmer, how did he drown?

Kate is certain there is more to this case than meets the eye. As she and her research assistant Tristan Harper dig deeper, they discover a bloody trail that points towards an active serial killer hiding in plain sight. People have been silently disappearing for years, and when another woman is taken, Kate and Tristan have a matter of days to save her from meeting the same fate.

Fallen Angels by Gunnar Staalesen

When Bergen PI Varg Veum finds himself at the funeral of a former classmate on a sleet-grey December afternoon, he s unexpectedly reunited with his old friend Jakob guitarist of the once-famous 1960s rock band The Harpers and his estranged wife, Rebecca, Veum s first love.

Their rekindled friendship is thrown into jeopardy by the discovery of a horrific murder, and Veum is forced to dig deep into his own adolescence and his darkest memories, to find a motive and a killer.

Tense, vivid and deeply unsettling, Fallen Angels is the spellbinding, award-winning thriller that secured Gunnar Staalesen s reputation as one of the world’s foremost crime writers.

Two books. Awful. And I have to be really careful as I am about to write a review for Christ Brookmyre’s Fallen Angel whilst I still have Gunnar Staalesen’s Fallen Angels in my head. Not my best planned out week lol. Busy enough week on the blog although a lot quieter than the past few. Recap below:

#Review – Bad Day At The Vulture Club – Vaseem Khan
#Review – The Other Twin – L.V. Hay
#Review – A Song For The Dark Times – Ian Rankin
#International Translation Day – Celebrating the Orenda Translators
#Review – Playdate – Alex Dahl
#Review – The Stolen Sisters – Louise Jensen
#Review – Stolen Children – Michael Wood
#Review – Dead Wrong – Noelle Holten

Had a bit of a run on children as victims books there Thursday/Friday. Completely unintended, it just works out that way sometimes. Only one blog tour today for this week, A Prayer for the Broken by Mark Tilbury.

And that’s about it. I’ll leave you with some pretty sunrise/sunset pictures from last week. That’s as nature based as my week got.

Have a fab reading week all. See you next Monday.
