About the Book

Are you looking for the perfect summer holiday read? Then you’ll love this laugh-out-loud comedy about the highs and lows of dating.

Izzy is a journalist who usually writes a technology column for a local newspaper. Her somewhat-intimidating boss William sets her the task of dating thirty-one men, via an internet dating site, all within a month, and writing about it for the paper.

Having an active, though fruitless, social life with her friend Donna, Izzy knows what she wants in a man, so creates a shopping list of dos and don’ts and starts ticking them off as she meets the men.

Follow the ups and downs of the dating process including Tim ‘the Weeble’, whose date leads Izzy to see banoffee pie in a whole new light, Lawrence the super-skinny social worker, Felix with his bizarre penchant for Persian Piranhas, and ‘the music maestro but don’t talk about dead pets’ Jake.

By the end of the month, will Izzy have met Mr Right?

Mandie’s Thoughts

Izzy MacFarlane has been given the task of going on 31 dates in 31 days as part of a running segment in the magazine she works for. As she logs on to internet dating site she wonders what she has let herself in for. As she wades her way through the possible and the not unless they were the last people on the earth, she quickly realises how hard it is to spot the fact from the fiction unless you are willing to take a chance.

Usually I struggle when a book is described as “laugh out loud”, and whilst I may not have been laughing loudly I was certainly reading the book with a big grin on my face as some of the dates that Izzy had to endure were quite comical. Aided with her list of what she will and what she won’t accept in a date her insights into how they all went, even the worst of them gives her readers things to consider when going on a date. Her best friend and co-worker Donna is an absolute scream and at times seems like she should be the one on the dating site but she is there as a one woman cheer squad, even agreeing to take part in the speed dating event. There is even a moment where you think that Izzy may have actually met her match however she is determined to keep it professional and sees it purely as a job.

It’s not often that I can honestly say I am glad that I have been married for as long as I have but The Serial Dater’s Shopping List has made me glad that I am not part of the dating scene. I am not sure that I could be bothered with all the false starts and odd balls that are out there and as for online dating when I was single that was not available, you actually had to go out and meet people. At least that way it was slightly harder for people to lie about age, height, weight etc. Ok they could still lie about who they are and what they do but by that point you kind of know if you are interested or not.

This is certainly a book that would not be out of place whilst packing for your holidays. With fun characters and situations that ensure it will keep you entertained from start to finish.
