Ettrick Bay - Isle of Bute Well this week has been a blast. Only two and half days in work and then I broke up for a long weekend of bookish fun. Yes, it was time for Bute Noir 2019. An absolutely cracking line up of authors, some truly amazing weather and some of the [...]

My next #Bookvent choice for day five is the emotional, topical and highly compelling #Breakers by @writerdougj . This book is beautifully written and elicits such a strong feeing amongst readers that Tyler and his little sister Bean, will stay with you long after the book is closed. A toxic family … a fight for survival… Seventeen-year-old Tyler lives in one of Edinburgh’s most deprived areas. Coerced into robbing rich people’s homes by his bullying older siblings, he’s also trying to care for his little sister and his drug-addict mum. On a job, his brother Barry stabs a homeowner and leaves her for dead, but that’s just the beginning of their nightmare, because the woman is the wife of Edinburgh’s biggest crime lord, Deke Holt. With the police and the Holts closing in, and his shattered family in devastating danger, Tyler meets posh girl Flick in another stranger’s house, and he thinks she may just be his salvation … unless he drags her down too. A pulsatingly tense psychological thriller, Breakers is also a breathtakingly brutal, beautiful and deeply moving story of a good kid in the wrong family, from one of Scotland’s finest crime writers. @orendabooks #booklove #bookvent2019 #lovebooks #books #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #bookblogger #bookblog #bookblogging

My day four #bookvent choice is the fantastic #NeverBeBroken by Sarah Hilary, the sixth book in the Marnie Rome series.Always so socially relevant this one has a whole layer of deep emotion and poignancy too which just sets it above the rest. I love the characters and the way the author has drawn us into their lives to a point where you feel such sadness for their pain. Stunning stuff. Children are dying on London's streets. Frankie Reece, stabbed through the heart, outside a corner shop. Others recruited from care homes, picked up and exploited; passed like gifts between gangs. They are London's lost. Then Raphaela Belsham is killed. She's thirteen years old, her father is a man of influence, from a smart part of town. And she's white. Suddenly, the establishment is taking notice. DS Noah Jake is determined to handle Raphaela's case and Frankie's too. But he's facing his own turmoil, and it's becoming an obsession. DI Marnie Rome is worried, and she needs Noah on side. Because more children are disappearing, more are being killed by the day and the swelling tide of violence needs to be stemmed before it's too late. NEVER BE BROKEN is a stunning, intelligent and gripping novel which explores how the act of witness alters us, and reveals what lies beneath the veneer of a glittering city. @headlinebooks #bookvent2019 #booklove #lovebooks #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #bookblog #bookblogger #bookblogging #books
My day 3 #bookvent selection is the second in a series set done in the Channel Islands, this time featuring the Island if Sark, a designated #DarkSkyIsland. @laradearman has captured the atmospheric intensity of that darkness perfectly, all wrapped around a story which kept me k trigger to the very last page. There's a killer on the island - and someone knows who... When human bones are found in a remote bay in the Channel Islands, DCI Michael Gilbert is plunged into an investigation to find out who they belong to. The remains are decades old - but after another body is discovered, the police realise they could be dealing with a serial killer. Journalist Jennifer Dorey is desperate for answers, driven by a secret of her own - but it soon becomes clear that nobody on the island is quite what they seem. Will anyone tell the truth before it's too late? Or will the killer on the island strike again...? A gripping thriller, perfect for fans of Ann Cleeves and Peter May. @trapeze_books #booklove #books #lovebooks #bookvent2019 #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #bookblog #bookblogger #bookblogging

Today’s #Bookvent choice is in that kept me absolutely hooked from the start. A book I read in a day, that was tense, atmospheric and full of suspect characters looking for an escape, but from who or what? #sleep by @cltaylorauthor @avon_books All Anna wants is to be able to sleep. But crushing insomnia, terrifying night terrors and memories of that terrible night are making it impossible. If only she didn’t feel so guilty… To escape her past, Anna takes a job at a hotel on the remote Scottish island of Rum, but when seven guests join her, what started as a retreat from the world turns into a deadly nightmare. Each of the guests have a secret, but one of them is lying – about who they are and why they're on the island. There's a murderer staying in the Bay View hotel. And they've set their sights on Anna. Seven strangers. Seven secrets. One deadly lie. The million-copy bestseller is back in her darkest, twistiest book to date. Read it if you dare! Perfect for fans of Lesley Kara’s The Rumour and Cara Hunter’s DI Fawley Thrillers. #bookvent2019 #booklove #lovebooks #books #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #bookblog #bookblogger #bookblogging
