The Official Book Blurb
How far would you go if someone took your wife? Especially, if you buried her a week ago.
When Jason Wells is faced with this scenario, he is confronted with the prospect of committing a crime that will have far-reaching consequences.
Can young DC Sally Poynter get through to him before he crosses that line, or does a desperate husband prove to be the case she won’t ever forget? A prequel novella, set before Shallow Waters, the first in the DI Hannah Robbins series.
This short story acts as a prequel to the DI Hannah Robbins series, although it doesn’t feature Robbins all that much. Most of the story is featured around DC Sally Poynter and the relationship she manages to establish with victim Jason Wells whose wife’s body is being held to ransom to make Jason commit a very specific crime. It follows the rookie detective as she struggles to settle into a new team, wanting to find her feet against opposition from a colleague, balancing all of this against an unofficial FLO role with Jason.
Because this is a short I can’t say too much more about the plot without giving it all away but this was a compelling and tense story and Rebecca Bradley has showcased her great talent for creating very likeable characters as well as her clear knowledge of police procedure, which you’d expect given this used to be her career. It doesn’t overwhelm the text but you do get a sense of that authenticity without sacrificing any of the entertainment value of the story.
The pacing in this book is just right, balancing action with intrigue and taking the reader on an often tense ride with the main protagonists. The ending is especially fraught as Jason battles his conscience over what is right for his job and what is right for his wife and the pain he is feeling from her loss, both her death and the abduction of her body, is palpable. A great read which has made me all the more determined to move onto the main series, starting with Shallow Waters.
