Blog Tour: My Beautiful Disaster – The Road to Publication (@joannahughes77; @emmamitchellfpr)

Today I am delighted to be part of the blog tour for My Beautiful Disaster. I’ll be bringing you a Q&A with author J.D. Hughes in a moment on her road to publication but first things first – here is what the book is all about.

MBD coverThe Official Book Blurb

It doesn’t matter, because the enigmatic bachelor will stop at nothing and play dirty to get what is his.

Sophia Lewis had nothing until she started working directly for Daniel at Dukes Industries. Having grown up in care, she’s tough, has an answer for everything and knows how to handle all varieties of men. For two years, Sophia has attended to her overbearing boss’ every whim. Gone above and beyond the call of duty.

When an indecent proposal presents itself, boundaries are pushed and limits are tested. Can Daniel and Sophia remain professional to fool the dead Uncle’s Lawyers? As lines become blurred and tempers become frayed, can two strong willed souls be the key to unlock each other’s hidden secrets? Or will the high price of the deal come at a devastating cost to them both?

*Warning* Mature themes and one hell of a cliff hanger!

Oo-er missus. With a warning like that how can you resist?

So it’s over to Joanna now who talks us through her road to publication.

When you first decided to get your ideas out of your head and onto paper.

My Beautiful Disaster’s storyline has been burning at the back of my mind for five whole years. It’s my second novel and it took a back seat because life got in the way. As soon as I’d finished my last novel You Have My Heart, I started My Beautiful Disaster before the first had been sent to the publisher. You see, ‘You Have My Heart’ was my ‘baby’ so to speak and was an itch I just had to scratch. All I wanted to do was write a book about a shy girl who had no choice but to hire an escort for the night. Suffice to say, it evolved into so much more and became a hit. Once I’d finished, I felt no longer consumed by the two leads and was ecstatic when it went to print.

How long did that first manuscript take to perfect?

Around six months. I made everyone close to me read it even if it wasn’t their type of genre.

How did you get it in front of publishers?

Well, I searched Google extensively. I decided not to send my manuscript to an author house in fear of rejection (silly, I know) and decided to self-publish. I found Publish Nation and decided they were the company for me. They were faultless and still are to this day. Big shout out to Gwen. She is my rock.

What was the first reaction of people?

I was overwhelmed with the reaction from family and friends. I expected a few people to like it but nothing like the feedback I was given. People genuinely swooned over it and couldn’t believe I’d written something so deep. They didn’t know I had it in me. To be honest, I didn’t know I had it in me.

Did the publishers want to change a lot?

My publisher is the best. They’re nothing but supportive and offer great advice. It’s always my choice on decisions I make and they always fully support my final say.

How long did it take from them to get it out to the public?

Around six weeks.

What input did you have on the cover? Font? Etc.

I chose an image from my publisher’s catalogue and they tweaked the artwork. I had overall say on the cover. I was pleased as punch when I saw the finished product.

If you could do it all again, what would you change?

The cover. Ha. Apparently, ‘You Have My Heart’ was too suggestive to promote on Amazon and Facebook. I’ve learned a very valuable lesson and gone for ‘elegant’ for my next novel.

Thanks Joanna. It’s been great having you on the blog and good luck with the rest of the tour.
