#Bookvent – Celebrating my favourite reads of 2016.
Another day, another series, another absolutely stellar author. This writer’s books are very well known; he’s been releasing them since the 80’s. His fictional Detective, or should I say retired Detective is one of the best known characters in recent history and while time may have aged him, it hasn’t mellowed his character all that much.
Again, embarrassing confession time, but I hadn’t read any of these books before this year. And again, thank the lord for audio books and a lot of long drives up to Scotland and back. 20 books is a lot to catch up on… I knew the character. I’d seen him on TV once. But I’d never associated him with books (don’t shout at me – I had a 17/18 year reading hiatus and I was only 11 when book 1 was released. I think I was still reading Nancy Drew and Hardy Boys then. And Stephen King.). When I finally started reading again I knew I had a mammoth task to try and catch up but some series are just worth it. And this is one of them. Book 20 is
Rather Be The Devil
by Ian Rankin
Rebus may not be a copper anymore but he doesn’t let that stop him. He is a truly enduring character and even though age, and lack of concern for his health when he was younger, may be catching up with him, his wits are as sharp as ever. The big characters are all here, the mystery just as intriguing as ever. His civilian status allows him to take even more liberties around the investigation than he ever would have. He’s a character that grows on me with every book and I’m looking forward to keeping filling in the gaps in my knowledge of Rebus’ history over the coming months.
