Read a @Bookouture a Day. Featured Authors – Claire Seeber & Arlene Hunt (@claireseeber, @arlenehunt)

Next up on in my ‘Read a Bookouture a Day‘ feature are two authors who created very different but equally compelling thrillers. Both had me caught on the hook from the off and proved to be tense and atmospheric reads.

First up is a book I reviewed way back in June. A re-release under the Bookouture label, ‘Last To Die‘ by Arlene Hunt is a real hunter-prey kind of chase which had my heart in my mouth on more than one occasion.

Last to die

The Official Blurb

He watches. He waits. He kills …

When Jessie Conway survives a horrific mass high school shooting, in the aftermath she finds herself thrust into the media spotlight, drawing all kinds of attention. But some of it is the wrong kind.

Caleb Switch, a sadistic serial killer has been watching her every move. A skilled hunter, he likes his victims to be a challenge to him. Jessie is strong, fearless, a survivor, and now…she is his ultimate prey.

As Caleb picks off his current victims one by one, chasing, killing and butchering them with his crossbow, he’s closing in on Jessie… But will Jessie defy the odds and escape with her life? Or will she be Caleb’s final sacrifice …

Well. This was one heck of a thrill ride. From the very opening pages the action comes at you thick and fast. As a survivor of a school shooting, Jessie has avoided the spotlight and tried to live an anonymous life with her husband, Mike. When she unwittingly becomes the focus of Caleb’s attention, she is once again thrown into a situation which will test the very limits of her resolve and the true strength of her character. Caleb is a vicious and unremorseful killer and when he and Jessie finally come face to face, the tension and fear levels are off the charts. My full review can be found here, but if you are looking for an almost frantically paced, nerve jangling, hold your breath kind of a book, then absolutely give this a whirl. Jessie is a true survivor, Caleb so calculatingly charming that his true nature is all the more disturbing because of it. It is available to purchase here for UK Readers and here for US Readers.

About the Author

Arlene spent her childhood with ‘my nose buried in a book’.  She was a fierce debate-captain in school and her love of language was bound to lead her to writing. Alongside being an author, she writes, edits and reviews briefs for radio.

Arlene is married with one daughter and lives with a crotchety one-eyed cat named Binkley and a German Shepherd named Archer, who is not at all crotchety.

Next up is the latest novel by Claire Seeber, ‘The Stepmother‘.

The Official Blurb

The perfect wife. A fairytale family. Don’t believe your eyes…

Jeanie and Matthew are a happily married couple who both have teenage children from previous relationships.

No one said it would be easy to raise a blended family under one roof but Jeanie and Matthew are strong. They will make it work.

And whilst Jeanie’s step-daughter Scarlett rejects her, Jeanie will just have to try harder to win her over.

But Jeanie has a past. A terrible secret she thought she’d buried a long time ago. And now, it’s coming to the surface, threatening to destroy her new marriage.

Someone is playing a terrifying game on Jeanie and she must put a stop to it once and for all.

After all, a fairy tale needs a happy ending … doesn’t it?

A compelling, dark and twisty psychological thriller that will grip fans of Behind Closed Doors, Between You and Me and The Teacher.

The Stepmother‘ was released in mid July and my full review can be found here. It is the story of Jeanie who feels she has found the perfect partner in Matthew, divorcee and loving father to two young children. A true psychological thriller, it follows Jeanie as she becomes increasingly isolated from her former life and her family. Her days are filled with the family and the house, a house which while it may look picture perfect, is actually hiding some dark and strange secrets. As increasingly strange things start to happen, you are left questioning whether someone or something out to get Jeanie? And with Matthew becoming distant and her step-daughter Scarlett seemingly trying to undermine her at every turn, Jeanie begins to wonder is she has made the right decision in marrying Matthew. But as Jeanie is hiding secrets of her own, how long can she evade her past, and when the truth comes out what impact will it have on her marriage?

With a too-good-to-be-ture, actually quite creepy setting and progressively more disturbing things happening around Jeanie, this will have you double checking doors and windows before going to bed at night. A chilling and intriguing reimagining of the story, Snow White, readers will be forced to question just who is the real evil in this tale? Is the Stepmother really the wicked one or is she simply misunderstood.  ‘The Stepmother‘ is available to purchase here for UK Readers and here for US Readers.
